JRA’s Executive Director Receives the 2010 Gerald P. McCarthy Award
William H. Street, Executive Director of James River Association has been awarded the 2010 Gerald P. McCarthy Award for Leadership in Environmental Conflict Resolution, awarded by the University of Virginia’s Institute for Environmental Negotiation.
The award has been presented each year since 2004 to an outstanding individual who fosters collaboration and has taken a leadership role in preserving and protecting Virginia’s environment. This individual supports capacity building for collaborate problem-solving in the Commonwealth through actions, contributions and/or education programs and stands as a role model to other individuals for the potential for bringing stakeholders together to resolve
environmental issues in Virginia’s communities, organizations and agencies. Without question this describes Bill’s many contributions and untiring effort to protect the health of America’s Founding River.
The 2010 McCarthy Award Committee was composed of faculty and select alumni of the Virginia Natural Resources Leadership Institute, representatives of state and federal agencies, local government, small business, private corporations and academic institutions in Virginia.
Past recipients of the Gerald P. McCarthy Award include Joe Maroon, Director of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation in 2009 and Marjorie Mayfield Jackson, Executive Director of the Elizabeth River Project in Portsmouth, Virginia in 2008. The award was created to honor Gerald P. McCarthy, Executive Director of the Virginia Environmental Endowment, its first recipient, for his varied contributions to protect and promote environmental literacy and mediation in Virginia.
